This is part of an ABC Radio Network broadcast previewing the
Derby happening the next day. To my surprise, I found out that
Genuine Risk lived until August, 2008 at 31 years old! (Click

recently-released 1983 budget. The audio cuts off during the
commercial break in the 2nd report.
ABC
Closed-Circuit Conference Call - Fri., Apr. 9, 1982
Download(871KB)
This was a special daily announcement to stations. It discusses
the 2nd of Ronald Reagan's radio addresses happening "tomorrow",
and the schedule changes taking place as a result. Also mentioned
are other programs being broadcast.
ABC
Closed-Circuit Conference Call - Fri., Apr. 23, 1982
Download(962KB)
In addition to program schedule information, this also lists
changes in when particular commercials are aired. This audio goes
on to a little bit of music playing after the conference call is
over. At this time, ABC played music in between the programming.
ABC
Audio Daily Information Pack - Mon., Jan. 23, 1995
Download(175KB)
By this time, the Closed-Circuit Conference Call had changed its
name. It should be noted that I recorded the 1995 ABC/ARN
material on an old portable reel-to-reel recorder at 1 7/8 IPS,
which should explain the sound quality.
ABC
Sports - Sat., Jan. 28, 1995

It's lucky when you get to catch live network bloopers like this
one. They couldn't get one of their commentators on.
Arkansas
Radio Network feed - 2 Lowell Ruffcorn reports, Jan. 23, 1995
Download(2.4MB)
For a number of months in 1995, you could
hear the Arkansas Radio Network on an audio subcarrier of the
Shepherd's Chapel station on C-band satellite. I recorded a few
things from there on the big-dish satellite system I had at that
time. I thought of those hog reports Les Nessman gave, and I
figured I had to put these programs here, since it's
basically the same thing - although they cover a heck of a lot
more than just hogs. This is a continous feed containing 2
agricultural reports with Lowell Ruffcorn: "Market Countdown"
at 1:20 PM, followed by "Market Brief" at 1:26.
Arkansas
Radio Network feed - 2 news reports with Michael Hibblen, Jan. 28,
1995
Download(2.3MB)
This continuous feed with newsman Michael Hibblen starts at 2:53:30
PM with an announcement to stations, then continues through the 2:55
and 3:00 news reports.
What's
Happening w/ Blue Gotham - WABN, Abingdon, Va., Apr. 24, 2002
Download(1.7MB)
Here's a remnant of WABN radio during the short period of time
when it was owned by the Abingdon Church of the Nazarene.
Although it was owned by a church, it was a secular oldies
station. One interesting thing on this station at that time was
its community bulletin board program called "What's
Happening", hosted by a woman named Blue Gotham (long "o"
sound). By the time 2002 was over, the station went off the air,
to return a few years later under new ownership, playing oldies -
although without "What's Happening?".
Dana
Ray on WOPI, Bristol, Va., 1990
Download(2.1MB)
Dana Ray Holtsclaw was a Tri-Cities radio legend who, like "Jimbo"
Widener, left us too soon. I recorded these clips of him speaking
between songs during, if I remember correctly, the first 2
Saturdays of WOPI as a country station in March or April, 1990.
He was known for his interesting off-the-cuff remarks, which
every once in a while got borderline-"controversial".
For example, "He might let you play free" in his ad for
Collingwood Miniature Golf. Then there was the time (not here)
where he referred to Brooks & Dunn as "Garth Brooks
& Holly Dunn". But he was a hoot to listen to when he
said things like this. He died at age 73 on May 3, 2001 after
keeping on with his DJ work until almost the end! The boombox I
recorded this on had a magnetism problem, which means a few
volume drops, and one moment where you hear the other side of the
casette backwards.
WQUT,
Gray, TN, 1979 (Now unscoped!)
Download(4.2MB)
I found this on a "blank" 8-track tape I got at a yard
sale. The audio was only on one speaker on the tape, so I have it
here in mono. You may hear a little material from albums dubbed
on the other tracks of the tape in the background here. Here's a
sample of what I believe WQUT can only try to be
nowadays with their "classic rock" format. (What's the
deal with the woman saying "Yeah" at the end of the
Michelob Light commercial, anyway?)
WQUT,
1985 - STEREO
Download(1.1MB)
Here's one featuring DJ Jay Christian and commercials for an IROC-Z
car giveaway sponsored by the (ulp) New Coke, a remnant from the
days when smokeless tobacco commercials were still allowed, and a
public service ad for literacy with an unintentionally-funny
beginning.
WQUT,
1985 - STEREO
Download(195KB)
This one features DJ Gordon Light coming out of Madonna's
legendary (also ulp)"Material Girl" with a live
commercial and promo.
